Strikes for Support

by Jeremiah Sterling

DETROIT- I went on a unique learning experience as a journalist entrusted with making a film for a Wayne State Warrior football fundraising bowling event. This project taught me the value of creativity, adaptation, and community engagement in storytelling. Initially, it was intimidating to think of a bowling event as a way to embody a football squad. Instead of on the field, how could I capture the essence of the Wayne State Warriors in the lanes? However, as I worked on the project, I saw that it offered a fascinating chance to investigate the friendship and cooperation that went beyond the football field. Upon assembling the video, I came to understand how crucial flexibility is to effective storytelling. Although the bowling event received most of the attention, I also wanted to draw attention to the fundraiser’s wider effects on the football program. I included interviews with Coach Ed Collins to highlight how the money raised would help the squad with equipment, practice, and other necessities. I discovered along the process that narrative is not limited to a certain format or media. It involves coming up with original ideas for engaging audiences and arousing their feelings. The spirit of the Wayne State Warrior is evident in the stories we tell, whether they are set in a bowling alley or on the football field. Ultimately, my work as a journalist producing a film for the Wayne State Warrior football fundraising bowling event served as confirmation of the narrative’s ability to bring people together, stoke passion, and effect positive change. I will always remember that lesson—that the most powerful stories can appear in the most unlikely places.

By Jeremiah Sterling

DETROIT- In the new media environment, TikTok—a social media site popularized for its short-form video content—has become a potent tool for journalists looking to tell stories. In the quick-paced world of digital journalism, where readers have short attention spans and ingest material quickly, TikTok provides journalists with a cutting-edge platform that allows them to interact with audiences in fresh and engaging ways.

By employing innovative storytelling strategies like rapid cuts, captivating music, and astute subtitles, journalists can condense intricate tales into brief, captivating segments that engage audiences. Investigative reports, human interest pieces, or breaking news updates—journalists may communicate information using TikTok in a visually engaging way that appeals to today’s tech-savvy audience.

Reaching a broad and varied audience is one of TikTok’s main advantages as a journalistic tool. TikTok, which has over a billion active users globally, offers journalists a unique chance to interact with people from all backgrounds and demographics. The democratization of content creation has made it possible for tales from underrepresented populations to be shared and magnified globally, which in turn has increased diversity and representation in the media.

Additionally, TikTok’s algorithmic feed makes sure that information is customized based on each user’s interests and preferences, which raises the possibility of connection and engagement. Through the utilization of tools like hashtags and duets, journalists may efficiently spread their message and promote community conversations on significant problems.

TikTok provides a space for experimentation and innovation among journalists in addition to its accessibility and reach. Journalists may experiment with new narrative strategies and push the limits of conventional storytelling with its user-friendly editing tools and integrated effects. With interactive polls and quizzes, as well as 360-degree immersive films, TikTok enables journalists to create engaging content that connects viscerally with viewers.

Not only does TikTok assist journalists in engaging with audiences, but the platform also creates the opportunity to showcase hidden gems. One of my favorite places on Wayne State University’s campus is the E-Sports facility. From the high-tech monitors to the room’s cutting-edge design, the place is perfect for gamers to unwind and take a break from their studies. My hope is to shed light on this room so that other students may have the opportunity to escape into the same realms that I have ventured into inside video games.

Sports shooting

By Jeremiah Sterling

I was drawn into a flurry of difficulties and excitement by sports photography, an arena where the elegance of visual narrative meets the pulse of athleticism. My journey into this dynamic realm expanded my technical abilities and sparked a fresh respect for the complexities involved in depicting sports via the lens. I explore my experience and offer my thoughts on the pleasures, difficulties, and learnings from this thrilling assignment in this article.

Gaining the timing and accuracy necessary to capture moments of action in the middle of the pandemonium of the sports stadium was one of the first hurdles I faced. Every brief instant required flawless technical skill and split-second decision-making. The game’s fast-paced action and my unwavering quest for the ideal shot challenged my photographic abilities, forcing me to predict moves and quickly adjust to shifting dynamics.

The variable lighting conditions present in both indoor and outdoor sporting arenas presented an additional difficult obstacle. Every environment has its own challenges with lighting, from the intense noon heat to the poorly lighted interiors of arenas. In order to obtain photographs that resonated with vibrancy and clarity, I had to work with the intricacies of light and shadow, so fine-tuning white balance, shutter speed, and exposure settings became second nature.

Notwithstanding these difficulties, I felt that the assignment’s greatest reward was the chance to capture instances of success, friendship, and pure athleticism. Every image captured the competitors’ unfiltered feelings and unwavering passion as they pushed the boundaries of human endurance, acting as a visual story. Every image conjured up a tangible sense of intensity and emotion that went beyond the confines of the athletic stadium, whether it was the triumphant celebrations of victory or the determined calm on the faces of the contestants.

My investigation into sports photography revealed the significance of narrative and emotional resonance in encapsulating the spirit of sports, in addition to technical mastery. Every picture had the ability to elicit a wide range of feelings and stories, whether it was about the victory of an underdog squad, the heartache of losing, or the tenacity in the face of difficulty. Sports photographers has the capacity to go beyond simple documenting by employing strategic composition, timing, and visual narrative. This allows them to turn athletic experiences into timeless artwork that strikes a chord with a broad range of viewers.

To sum up, my experience with sports photography was a roller coaster filled with adventures, pleasures, and priceless lessons. The chance to portray the spirit of athletics via the lens proved to be an incredibly gratifying experience, even though the technical complexities and hard nature of the task taxed my talents and perseverance. I take with me the knowledge gained, the moments recorded, and the unwavering love for visual storytelling that characterizes this thrilling art form as I continue to refine my technique and discover new avenues in the field of sports photography.

Ethics In Journalism

By Jeremiah Sterling

Intro

I discovered what the ethical standards for journalists are in this area. Being a successful photojournalist involves more than just having good camera skills; it also involves being reliable and credible.

First Amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. "

For all journalists, the First Amendment is essential because it guarantees our ability to report without fear of retaliation.

Photo Manipulation: There are instances when photo modification is powerful. Particularly for individuals who aim for excellence.

chapter eight of Multimedia Storytelling for Digital Communicators in a Multiplatform World, Seth Gitner wrote,  “When taking photographs for a newspaper or other media outlet, never manipulate an image or change its content.”

This is so important because if you are unaware it can be really easy to manipulate photos, and change the overall essence and aura from authentic shot.

Gitner expressed how important it is to never do such a thing. The only thing that Journalist should show is the truth. changing or manipulating photos or any other content would hurt you character and intergity which could destroy your career.

Ethical Considerations in Journalism: In order to keep your credibility, honesty, and dependability as a writer, ethical concerns are essential. Gitner describes why it’s not allowed to build up, recreate, or dramatize an incident.

Going by the NPPA Code of Ethics: What are some of your ethical Boundaries?

All visual journalists are required to follow nine principles in their everyday work as part of the NPPA Code of Ethics. It has a significant impact on how journalists behave ethically.

Journalists who adhere to their mission of truth, justice, and accountability are guided by the code of ethics.

Accuracy, integrity, respect, compassion, honesty, independence, professionalism, and accountability are all emphasized.

Legal Limitations as a Photojournalist:

You do not have the freedom to photograph whenever and whenever you like just because you are a photojournalist.

There are a few restrictions. Novice reporters may not be aware of many locations and regulations.

There are public spaces that are unrestricted, such as sidewalks, streets, beaches, parks, zoos, rail, and bus terminals. Government buildings, airports, and police headquarters are examples of public spaces that have limitations.

Your journalism profession may succeed or fail depending on how ethically you conduct yourself as a photojournalist. Gaining credibility, respect, and trust in your work as a journalist is contingent upon your ethical fitness.

Simply put, “photography” is the art or practice of using a camera to take and record images. Ultimately, there is much more to photography than that. I will discuss the lessons I have learned about camera controls in this essay.

Techinal Information: The three key settings that must be changed depending on what you are shooting are ISO, shutter speed, and F stop.

So what is Iso? And how does it affect The quality of my pictures?

ISO, gauges how sensitive a camera sensor is to light. Greater ISO values increase sensor sensitivity, which helps with low-light photography but also introduces noise, which lowers the quality of the images. Although they require more light, lower ISO settings result in crisper, less noisy images. To minimize image degradation and balance exposure, choose your ISO settings carefully. By controlling brightness, noise levels, and general clarity, it affects picture quality. By comprehending ISO, photographers can adjust settings to best suit different lighting scenarios, improving image quality and achieving desired visual effects.

Shutter speed? The amount of light that reaches the sensor of a camera is controlled by shutter speed, which determines how long the shutter is left open. Faster shutter speeds freeze motion, making them perfect for clearly capturing fast-moving scenes but necessitating plenty of light. Motion blur is produced at slower speeds, which is helpful for expressing movement but necessitates steady conditions. Selecting the right shutter speed is essential for striking the right balance between exposure and desired effects. Through the determination of sharpness, motion blur, and exposure accuracy, it directly affects picture quality. Gaining control over shutter speed allows photographers to add time to their shots, which improves storytelling and creates visually striking narratives.

Fstop/Aperature? The opening in a camera lens that regulates how much light enters the device is called an aperture. F-stops are used to measure it; higher numbers correspond to smaller openings and lower numbers to larger ones. For portraits and low light situations, a wider aperture (lower f-stop) lets in more light, enabling faster shutter speeds and a shallow depth of field. For landscape photography and sharpness maximization, a narrower aperture (higher f-stop) reduces light, resulting in longer exposure times and greater depth of field. Achieving the right depth of field and managing exposure through appropriate aperture selection directly affects the visual appeal and quality of the image.

Visual storytelling: knowing the fundamentals of photography is essential for telling stories through the Visual Storytelling chapter in the Multimedia Storytelling for Digital Communicators textbook. Understanding these guidelines will help you communicate with your target audience more effectively when using infographics, pictures, and videos.

Visual Storyteller’s Toolbox: consists of an assortment of methods, equipment, and components that photographers and filmmakers use to create visually striking stories. Composition principles, lighting techniques, color theory, framing, pacing, and editing strategies are just a few of the essential tools in this toolbox. Every tool has a distinct function for expressing feelings, making points, and directing the viewer’s attention within the story. Visual storytellers can effectively convey concepts, arouse feelings, and engross audiences in captivating visual journeys through a variety of media, such as photography, film, animation, and multimedia presentations, by becoming proficient with these tools.

Mobile Journalism: a type of journalism in which news content is gathered, produced, and distributed by reporters using smartphones or other portable electronic devices. It entails using mobile technology only to take pictures, record videos, interview subjects, and compose narratives. Journalists are better equipped to cover breaking news and events because mobile journalism enables rapid, on-the-go reporting from the field without the need for traditional heavy equipment. Additionally, it encourages citizen journalism and immediacy by enabling people to record and disseminate news stories from their points of view. With the increasing availability of smartphones and mobile internet connectivity, mobile journalism has grown in popularity. However In my opinion there are still ways that Mobile phones cant compete with professional camereas. I say this because of the creativity you can use in settings with your standard professional cammereas rather than a smartphone. It is still affective though in the field.

From Mail to Media: Examining the Development of Photojournalism Through Time.

A snapshot featuring CNN, mail from River Rouge, KrispyKrunchy and Amicci’s

From Mail to Media: by Jeremiah Sterling

Ever since the mid-19th century, journalists have been using images to communicate news to the world. It originally started with Roger Fenton. He is a pioneer of the photojournalism field by capturing, images during the Crimean War According to mymodermet.com (Jessica Stewart)

Another pioneer for photojournalism was Mathew Brady.

Brady captured images during the American Civil War. The images that he captured were surrounded around the camp, life, and the Battlefield for Harper weekly.

progressing from this war in the second half of the 19th century photojournalism went towards street life in London from 1876 to 1877 photographer John Thomson worked with Adolphe Smith to add to the field.

Photojournalists of the Golden Age

“From the 1930s through the 1970s, photojournalism saw its “golden age,” where technology and public interest aligned to push the field to new heights. Innovations like the flash bulb and compact Leica 35mm camera made photography more portable than ever. Photo-driven magazines like Berliner Illustrate ZeitungThe New York Daily News, and LIFE employed large staffs of photographers and used the photo-essay as a means to disseminate news.”

According to Jessica Stewart.

A vital component of our democracy has always been and always will be journalism. The truth is a journalist’s primary duty, and the people are their first allegiance.

Considering this and the transition from Mail to Media, a lot of people need to see something to believe it. Though it might have changed, photojournalism is still important.

Benjamin Franklin

The way that news is delivered has changed as much as every other area of contemporary life due to technology. The news media of today is more approachable and interesting than in the past. Thus, despite all the efforts made by newspapers to enhance their content—larger photos, tighter writing, and better designs—many Americans now understand they don’t need to put in as much effort reading when they can learn information more quickly and effortlessly by watching videos and listening to audio.
